The McLovin ID: the story behind Superbad's famous licence
Superbad came out in 2007. Nearly two decades later, the fake ID at the centre of it is still one of the most recognisable props in film comedy. Here's what's on it, why it stuck, and how to get one with your own face.
What is the McLovin ID?
In Superbad, three friends need alcohol for a party. Fogell's contribution is a fake Hawaii driver licence, and he has chosen a single name for it: McLovin. No first name, no surname, just McLovin.
The joke works because the card is so confidently wrong. Fogell is clearly a teenager, the licence is from Hawaii for no obvious reason, and the name sounds like a fast-food mascot. The card became the shorthand for the whole film.
What's printed on the McLovin licence
The details fans quote most often come straight from the card shown in the film. These are the same details our McLovin card starts with, before you change anything:

Why the McLovin ID became a cultural moment
Plenty of comedies have a fake ID scene. Superbad turned its one into a character. McLovin gets his own storyline, and the name is said so many times that it sticks for good.
The design helps. The Hawaii rainbow arcs across the card in bright, flat colours that are instantly readable in a screenshot. That's why the image still turns up as profile pictures, phone wallpapers, party invitations and fancy dress props.
Getting a McLovin ID with your own face

Is a McLovin ID legal to own?
Owning a novelty card as a collectible is a different thing from using a card to deceive someone. Our McLovin card is a fan-inspired novelty item. It isn't an identity document, and it can't be used to buy alcohol, get into venues or prove your age. Trying to use any card that way is against the law and, as the film shows, rarely goes to plan.
